A trio of good friends who have worked together on numerous engagements for many years and are still enjoying it.
It's members, Maree Steinway, piano player and singer, Tommy Falkingham, bass guitarist and singer and Richard Ruhle, drummer, are well versed in the regional styles of American music and their blend offers something fresh to Sydney.
Sassy Mama plays a repertoire which draws on the styles of Bebop, Blues, Latin, Soul and the more contemporary styles of New Orleans. It's really true that they play anything ranging from Bud Powell compositions to something reminiscent to Ramsey Lewis or Professor Longhair.
They worked extensively together in Sydney band, the Jive Bombers, where they were playing everything from the repertoire of Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, Swing, Jive as well as the Soul and R&B hits so they are very adept at playing for dancers.
Look out for Sassy Mama at that cool, comfortable jazz venue, Avery's Bar in the Avillion Hotel, corner of Pitt and Liverpool Streets in Sydney where they made their first appearance there in November 2002.

Their special guest for that night was Errol Buddle who is a jazz icon of Australia and is very active in his work playing saxes and woodwinds, and renowned internationally since he was first recognized for his work with the Australian Jazz Quintet who toured America and recorded for Bethlehem Records.
